Justin on Panels - Season 2, Episode 07

Season 2, Episode 07: Cleavage Optional: Gender, Cosplay, and Genderbending Cosplay

The adventure of cleaning up audio and improving show notes from previous panels continues in today’s episode of Justin on Panels. We are still working through MarsCon 2018, with the panel “Cleavage Optional: Gender, Cosplay, and Genderbending Cosplay”.

Content Warning: Blackface does get mentioned during this panel.

How is the cosplay experience different for women and men? Why is genderbent cosplay so popular? What fans aren't doing it and what characters aren't being genderbent? What does this mean for trans and non-binary characters and fans?
With: Bridget Landry, Justin Grays, Kris Heding

Please forgive the thumping sound at the beginning of the panel - I cannot remember for the light of me what was creating that sound.

The First Doctor being William Hartnell’s portrayal of The Doctor from Doctor Who. His style was Victorian-Edwardian.

The episode of Star Trek with the J’naii that we are referring to is “The Outcast” (TNG 5x17), and the episode with the Bynars was “11001001” (TNG 1x15). These episodes, along with any episode about the Trill, had so much potential to talk about gender and sexuality but were limited by the levels of acceptance of the time.

Do not conflate someone cosplaying a character of another race with someone cosplaying a character of another species. Raceface is Raceface, and it is not okay. During the previous panel “50 Shades of Blackface”, this gets discussed, as well as the kid dressed as Malcolm X and my friend dressed as Zoë Washburne.

If you can, please help me continue to create and produce Justin on Panels. As little as $1/month will help me get into a position where I can spend more time working directly on the podcast and eventually expand it’s reach. To this end, I am on both Patreon and Ko-fi, membership platform services designed to help facilitate the relationships between patrons and creators.
I know that it's not always possible to sponsor someone on a monthly basis. If you would help me with a one time donation, please feel free to use PayPal, CashApp, or Vemno. Producing content takes time and effort, and any support would be most appreciated. Your donations help me cover expenses and eventually will let me be able to create quality content full-time.
